fone

Pizzatel Enterprises New Isp Service is a free to use hobby 56k dialup internet service for vintage computer and telephony enthusiasts.

The service uses a voip line through Voip.ms and is reachable through the PSTN.

PizzaTel can provide full 56k service and supports multilink connections

What is multilink? Multilink allows you to bond multiple dialup connections into one, faster connection. Voip.ms allows you to make multiple calls through the same number, you just may be billed for each call separately. You need a physical FXS port (phone jack) and modem for each connection.

I'm Connected, Now What?

Modern web is all but unusable on a 56k connection, and any version of windows newer than 7 will saturate a 56k connection with telemetry data. A dialup internet connection is best enjoyed on an older computer setup with a proxy service.

  • Protoweb Proxy is a proxy service restoring internet sites from the 90's and early 2000's
  • TheOldNet is another proxy service similar to above
  • FrogFind is a search engine for old computers powered by DuckDuckGo

How Do I Get a Phone Line?

Pizzatel Dialup ISP uses a voip line through Voip.ms. Voip works just fine for dialup, it just requires some configuration on your ATA device to ensure the line acts more like a traditional POTS line.

Here is an article from CRD on setting up an ATA: Configuring SPA122 ATA for Dial-Through This guide is helpful for most cisco/linksys branded ATAs. In particular, you need to turn off anything to do with fax, and enforce g711ulaw codec.

If you want to get your own line through Voip.ms, use my referral code and we both get credits: PizzaTel Referral

Calls between Voip.ms customers are totally free. Connect as much and as long as you wish. However, if you are dialing in using a different voip provider or a real POTS line, I'd ask you keep your connection time below 4 hours. Voip.ms allows up to 25 concurrent calls to the same number, so multiple people can be dialed in at once.

Voip.ms has a wiki on setting up an ATA device to use their service here: Voip.ms ATA Devices Wiki

Infrastructure

A Cisco 3825 ISR handles the telephony side with a SIP connection to Voip.ms. The 3825 creates a T1 connection going to a Cisco AS5350, providing it with 23 usable channels.

The AS5350 is what you are actually dialing into. It has a FlexDSP modem that can provide up to 60 concurrent 56k connections. It also handles authentication and routing for your device.
